Dr. Li examines her patient

Originally coming from China, Dr. Jin Li, MD, PhD, FAAN, FAANEM, has developed a successful physician’s career in the U.S. She is a co-founder of Headache Specialists at the Westchester Medical Center, Section Chief of Neuromuscular Medicine at WMC, and Associate Professor of Neurology at New York Medical College. She has been practicing medicine in New York for nearly 30 years.

Dr. Li shared with The Youth Fund audience her insightful views about the experience and qualifications required for an accomplished physician in the U.S. She explained the road to becoming a doctor – from pre-med, medical school, residential training to continued education. She discussed important characters of a doctor in addition to having intellectual capability – excellent communications skills, empathy, compassion and the care about the disadvantaged groups. A happy, successful doctor is motivated by his or her passion for the profession, not by monetary rewards. The dedication to public service is at the core of thriving in a medical career.

“If you truly love the work of helping others and are willing to make all the efforts, then this career path will be a good fit for you,” said Dr. Li.
